MODERN PROBLEMS OF DETERMINING THE ECONOMIC POTENTIAL OF ARCTIC

Abstract

Article is aimed at studying a set of factors that influence on economic possibilities of using the resources of Arctic in context of global climate change. In order to determine the prospects for development of economic opportunities in Arctic region, it is necessary: firstly, to study the international regime of Arctic; secondly, to determine the extent of impact of global climate change on transport potential of region; thirdly, to explore its energy capabilities; fourthly, to estimate the use of biological resources of region, and, finally, to identify problems that have an influence on effective economic development of region. Systematic approach to the study of economic features and development prospects of Arctic region, as well as a set of general scientific methods are represent a methodological background of current article. Analysis showed that the geographical, biological, environmental, geopolitical and strategic factors in their complex relationship determine the wide possibilities for using the economic potential of Arctic region. However, a set of negative factors, for instance, limited geographical access, environmental problems, difficult geopolitical situation, create more problems for efficient use of Arctic resources. Conclusions and generalizations of study can be used as a basis for future studies with purpose to estimate the regional and global significance of Arctic changes, including both possible benefits and problems. Scientific significance lies in theoretical generalization of factors affecting the economic potential of development of Arctic. Practical significance of study is that the results can be used in educational process, preparing analytical papers, taking into account the current situation and capabilities of Arctic region.
